Being Late, Disorganized, and God’s Word

Categories: Staff Blogs,Worship

Being LateI heard a discussion on the radio today about how to eliminate certain “bad” habits in your life.  They discussed always being late and being disorganized.  They said if you’re always late, you’re not going to decide one morning to be on time from now on and it just happen.  The point being, you have to plan on those things that just “come up”, so they don’t surprise you.  If your disorganized, you’re not going to go from a life of chaos to having everything neat and tidy overnight.  It takes small steps, like making up your bed every morning or not leaving dishes in the sink at night.  It made me think about the time I spend (or try to spend) in God’s Word each day.  It works the same way.  Praying that God will give you a hunger for His Word doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll develop a habit of reading it overnight.  It takes planning ahead and small steps.  You have to decide when the best uninterrupted time to study His Word is and set that time aside daily.

If you always shift this time around, fitting it into everything else you do in a day, you won’t be consistent.  Decide what other parts of your daily routine you can shift around to ensure your Bible study time stays consistent.  Just like the small steps it takes to become organized, if you’re not in the habit of studying God’s Word, you’re not going to go from rarely reading it to reading an hour a day overnight.  Take small steps.  Pick out one verse and meditate on it all day.  Write it down; email it to yourself; memorize it; post it on Facebook or Twitter asking people what they think about it.  Keep it in front of you so you can think on it all day.

God’s Word is so good and so true, before you know it, you’ll want two verses in front of you, then a whole chapter, and before long, you’ll read every footnote and cross reference because you can’t get enough!  So, here’s a great one to start with today.  It’s from Proverbs 7:3, about God’s words, “Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”
