As one of the Pastors here at Grace Life, I am thankful for many opportunities. We have so many things to be grateful for as the Pastors of such an amazing body of believers. I was reminded of this truth during our latest Covenant Service. I found myself in a most humbling position as one of the Pastors serving the Lord’s Supper. While hundreds of members came to take their bread and remove a cup from the tray, I found myself focusing on their hands. I began to notice how different these hands were, from shape, size, texture and even color. I couldn’t help but think of how each hand represented a past or maybe even a story.
A lady without a ring on her left hand- What’s her story?
Is she recently divorced, never married or perfectly happy with singleness?
The stained hands of a gentleman- What’s his story?
Does he work six days a week just to get by, work to gain earthly pleasure or did he helped a stranger in need?
A young innocent hand- What’s his story?
Does he have a constant father figure, a devoted mother, or is he being raised by Godly grandparents?
The wrinkled hands of a Lady- What’s her story?
Did she work up until the age of retirement, lost her job to a younger employee, or does she constantly hold and love on her great grandchildren?
A tattooed hand- What’s his story?
Do these tattoos remind him of a distant past, a symbol of someone he once was or maybe a new declaration of who he is now?
A weak hand- What’s his story?
Does he suffer from an incurable disease, is it signs of a hard life, or did he give his strenght serving our country?
Many different hands representing heartache, love, betrayal, honor and emotions that we will never know or completely understand. While these hands could tell many stories and experience, none have or will ever be able to earn their own righteousness. So how are all of these and (your hands) welcomed at the Lord’s table. Its all because of the bloody, bruised and nailed scared hands of Jesus!
Paul speaks of this in Romans 3:22-24. “This righteousness comes through FAITH in Jesus Christ to ALL who believe. There is NO DIFFERENCE, vs 23 for ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, vs24 and are JUSTIFIED freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
We all need to be reminded that everyone has a story, but its only because of God’s story that our hands can hold a piece of bread and take the cup.
“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
Many hands are wounded but its through the wounded hands of Jesus that we are healed.
What’s your story? Go and tell it!!
